Test coin molds

Plaster test molds with some random coins from my collection. Note how the graphite powder pooled all over the tops of the coins.

Well, it would appear that my most recent attempt at making a coin mold has failed again, though I did manage to get this one to separate. The graphite that I managed to pick up was not fine enough and for some reason pooled on top of the the coins when pouring the second layer. this caused the detail on one side of the coins to be completely lost. Still, this is not the end of the world as I still intend to use the mold anyway to test how many coins I can make before the mold degrades and detail is lost from the one “good” side.

All that’s left to do is wait for it to dry a bit more and cut the sprue and vent channels, then pour some pewter.

Category icon Playing Diablo (the origional) on XP - Thu Jun 18 21:18:51 2009
For some reason the wife wanted to play the old, original Diablo game again, so I pulled the box off the shelf and tried to see if I could get it to work on XP. The program requirements are pitiful these days compared to more modern games: 60MHz CPU, 8M RAM, CD ROM player. Amazingly, It installed on XP with no problems - in literally 5 seconds from an ISO image of the CD ROM that I made. Not bad for a late 90s game. The only hassle to getting the game working correctly was setting up IPX/SPX correctly since it had been about 10 years since I last worked with that network protocol. Eventually, I managed to remember that you had set the internal network number manually to something unique. A few minutes later the wife and I were hacking and slashing away in a network game.

Category icon #2 on Google - WTF? - Tue Jun 16 21:17:40 2009
This is really strange. If you Google the words “banknote” design” you will, for some unknown reason, see this site listed in the #2 spot (#2 out of 819,000 total hits). I thought this was a glitch in the ranking system when I first noticed it last month, but it seems that was not the case since my ranking is still the same. Either I’m a genius with the Google keyword/ranking game (not likely) or I’ve stumbled across a very under manipulated set of keywords.

Category icon Crunch Time! - Fri Jun 12 19:32:52 2009
Well, there hasn’t been much activity lately due to the fact that it’s Crunch Time in the Dragoon schedule. Last weekend we did a show up near Albany, NY and this weekend we’ve got a smaller parade in CT. Between that and work, there’s not much time left in the week for projects, so the pewter smiting project will have to wait another weekend.
